Hi Parents:
I want to remind you that I am in each Sunday at 9:20 and have a small group of students who come for extra help or enrichment. Your children are welcome before school for extra Hebrew help. Perhaps they need extra one on one. Send them with their breakfast and we sit and read. It gives me a chance to work on one one and help them to feel confident.
If you want to get your children involved in learning go here:http://shalomuvrachah.com/ and then choose the RED button on the left bottom. Activities are found if you then press the orange button, or the red button to play a game.
Get your children involved in thinking about what they have learned this Sunday. I look forward to working with them each week.
Renee
Grade 5: Please practice reading page 41. Pay attention on the last line #8 for mastery as I will test the students on their fluency on line 8 as it really has a little bit of everything, rule-wise, and if the students can read this with confidence then we move on. Again, come early in the morning for extra help. (Abby continue working on your ‘Final Mem’ letter).
Grades 3, 6 and 7: Practice this week will be page 57 and the silent ‘ayin’. Treat it just like an ‘aleph’.
Grade 4: Homework practice this week will be page 53. Once you have read through that, move on to pate 57 as I introduced the silent ‘Ayin” in class and as a silent letter it is read as an Aleph.

GRADE 5
Dear Parents,
I hope you all had a wonderful Chanukah. As we are about to begin our Winter break please have your child continue their homework. There are several students who are coming to class without opening their book and practicing a few minutes. Some are forgetting their letters. Others are doing their work and and reinforcing what we do in class.
Although Chanukah is the great holiday of miracles, this is one that each child and family should take the time to work with so that their children reach success. It’s a quick pace this year and we need to keep up with it. I am in school everyday at 9:20 and encourage those seeking extra help to come seek me out.
Here are a list of some sites that I find can be helpful:
http://www.ancient-hebrew.org/7_home.html
http://www.akhlah.com/aleph_bet/aleph-bet.php
http://www.ehebrew.org/articles/hebrew-alphabet.php#.UM-G3ayM2q0
http://www.jr.co.il/alef-bet.htm
There are many sites and ways to learn if your child feels they are falling behind but it cannot substitute at home practice.
Homework:
Accelerated work on regular and final NUN on page 62.
All others study page 39 where we left off.

Grade 3
What a class! They are working their way right through the book. Have students practice pages 47 and 53 for practice over this long vacation.
These students want to be ‘stretched’ a bit in their learning. Below is a prayer for Passover. The can work with this – Remember reading from right to left. They do not know all the Hebrew letters yet, but can certainly work with the transliteration. Have a great vacation.

GRADES 6/7
Keep up the practice over this long winter break. Students should continue to study page 45 Koof, 47 Tzadee and the page 53 the new vowel that is the long sound “e”. Although it is vacation time, we are moving at a steady pace and 5 minutes a day a few days a week to review the letters we learned are a lot easier than having them be reintroduced to the letters because they forgot them. In the long run, it pays off. Keep up the good work!
GRADE 4
We have had a few absences but still sprinted ahead. Students should study:
39 Silent Alef
41 Vav

47 Tzadee

All Parents: Homework in Ivrit Aleph — Students should be spending 5-7 minutes, no more- 4 to 5 times a week. Please check to make sure your student is studying. We keep a pace so that we learn all the letters so that your children can return right back to the classroom and meet the Hebrew part of the curriculum with success. I have had several students who are not able to practice at all. What happens is that they need to be retaught what they forgot.
In keeping with the pace of the class, please make sure your children practice their Hebrew. Students who have forgotten the previous week’s work can come to my before school drop in session at 9:20am. By offering this, I can keep the students for their half hour with me at the right pace.
Please send your children with their Hebrew school book (take a peek to make sure they have their Aleph Bet book). If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at:

Even with the lapses of holidays and missed Sundays the kids are practicing and serious about learning. Homework is to practice pages 32 and 27 in that order. I always like to start from the newest and then go back to the chapter before. Ideally 4 times a week for 5 minutes each will keep them current and make learning Hebrew a breeze. The are all so sweet. I left them with a “Study hard” as they were walking out the door and they all echoed back, “We will”. What wonderful students!Grade 3
My small group of fierce studiers are on page 34. I told them to be careful of the new rules for the new vowel –> (shva) :
Under the first letter it sounds like a short ‘i’ as in ‘kitten’. Under the other letters, it is silent and the children practicing a short pause in the word. Have them practice page 34. Keep up the good hard work!Grade 6/7

Not everyone in this group is studying. My advice for the parents is just ask the children what page did they study. If they did study it they will know it. Without practice learning Hebrew lags and we revisit material that we should have known. Ideally 4 times a week for 5 minutes only each time is perfect. It is not always length, but like anything to do well and ‘own it’ is frequency. They are a great group and with some serious home study will fly with the material.Grade 4
We are on page 25 and this is where the students should be in their studies. We keep moving ahead at a steady pace and with all the holidays and vacations it seems as though there is never enough time. At home study is very important. Ideally 4 times a week for 5 minutes each day so that what they learn in class is reinforced or it is easily forgotten the next Sunday.

I apologize for next getting homework assignments posted as Hurricane Sandy left me without internet, electricity and phone. I am thankful we are all right and made it through and hope that you and all your loved ones are fine. I know some children had no electricity and many families had a lot more to be concerned with than home practice.
Although we have gotten through the many Jewish Holidays and several Sundays without Hebrew school this is why attendance is so important. I want to see each and every student succeed to the best of his/her ability. Also Hebrew at home practice. For those students who have been spending four days of the week spending no more than 5 minutes of Hebrew reading, they come to class ready for “What’s next”. It does show in these small groups who is able to spend time with at home practice, such a small commitment- 5 minutes a day so that your child feels prepared and does not struggle. We have 2 Sundays ahead of us that leave the students without Hebrew school. Next week is one of them. Below is the home practice assignment.Since we do not meet for two weeks, please ask your child to take out their book and practice. If they are struggling, then please have them read the last lesson that they feel comfortable with. Make sure that they read aloud and not silently.
Homework is page 19 as we learned the new letter KAF. I also introduced them to the letter HAY found on page 21. If they find 21 too challenging please let them review what we did in class, page 19.

| 4th GradeWe have completed learning the letters Bet, Tav and Shin and our first 2 vowels. Homework practice will be on page 8. Have a terrific week!3rd GradeGreat job studying at home and doing homework! It shows you have practiced! It sure helps us fly by the book with little effort. We learned the letter Kaf today and homework practice will be on page 19. Have a great week!6th/7th Grade We got right through to the letter ‘Hay” today. Most students are practicing at home but some still say that they are far too busy. It is important to practice only 5 minutes a day for 4 times a week. I am sure that everyone can find that 5 minutes. It is the best investment of time, as Bar/Bat Mitzvah is at hand for many students and now is the time to put that effort forth. Parents do not need to help the students as they know what to do and when the students leave class, the homework practice is only on a skill that they have demonstrated in class that they know well. If it is forgotten by week’s end, often it is for lack of at home practice. This is a great class and in class 100% effort is put forth. Let’s keep it rolling all week long! Have a great week.4th GradeMade it right to the letter “Lamed”. 100% Homework practice. It’s great because it lets the kids feel great what they are doing it because they all understand what we have done so far. Homework study will be on page 17. Keep up the great work! |

Grade 5 Ivrit
We have introduced/reviewed the letters Bet and Tav as well as the new vowels. Make sure that you practice reading the lesson for five minutes a day, 4 times a week so that you will remember what we did and feel comfortable about it. Be sure to look at the “Bet” as I know that there was confusion about it. The “Bet” has a ‘bottom’ or a ‘base’ to it where the “Tav” does not. Often these letters are confused and with Hebrew reading practice they will begin to look very different.

Great job practicing Hebrew over the long break we had. When you do, you can see that it makes it that much easier to move forward.
We introduced two new letters “Mem” and “Lamed”. Make sure that you practice on page 17 and read aloud. Practice while reading it silently will not help. Hebrew is a language and as all languages are spoken. Practice reading it so you can hear it and self monitor your progress.

All grades:
Today was a great start. The students were introduced to the concept of Hebrew being read from right to left and at the same time reading consonant – vowel (up down). I think that they all felt that this was a great decoding adventure!
We did start with “bet” and the two vowels and most moved on to the two letter ‘tavs’. I do not move on until all the students understand each week’s letters/vowels and concepts.
I told them that although the book has some engaging activities to write and they are free to do so, the reading is what I am looking for. I spoke to them about a dedicated 5 minutes a day 4 days a week (much better than a 20 minute sit down session on a Sunday morning before heading out the door to Sunday school.
I love Hebrew and love languages and enjoy taking your children on a new adventure and turning them into bilingual readers. Hebrew is also not a hard language. I know I struggled with the ‘old way’ of being taught, but I hope to make each lesson engaging and exciting and that each child is able to meet success.
Please stop in and say ‘hi’! I’d love to meet the parents. Also if there are questions or concerns you can reach me at my home email of: rba01701@yahoo.com
Warm Regards, B’Shalom,Renee
